“Ach, an corrmhíol diabhalta sin!” (Ach, that devilish mosquito!) – Ireland’s Mosquitoes Celebrate St Paddy’s Day!

It is about time to start thinking of Saint Paddy and the wearing of the green.  Celebrations are planned in the United States and certainly in Ireland, which has a somewhat mild climate.   But, did you know that Ireland has its share of mosquitoes?

The following was extracted from a report by Health Protection Surveillance Centre, 25-27 Middle Gardiner St, Dublin 1, Ireland.

Have we mosquitoes in Ireland?
We have mosquitoes in Ireland, the commonest being Culex pipiens. They can be seen hovering over water and marshy places in the late summer and early autumn, especially in the south and east of the country.

There are even blog postings related to mosquitoes in Ireland.
The following are comments from: http://www.johnbreslin.com/blog/2004/11/15/mosquito-in-ireland

Hi,
I live in Co Leitrim and today captured what I was convinced was a mosquito…..I showed my mam and brothers but they wouldn’t believe me….now I know it was most definitely a mosquito….I was also getting rather large bites recently, mainly at night time and couldn’t believe that these were Midge bites…. however they were obviously mosquitoes!   I dont know what to make of all this…. xD

I captured a mosquito today in Kerry.   I checked mosquito images and this guy is one for sure.   There were about ten of them in the sitting room.

In 2009, a program was announced by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre, in collaboration with University College Cork, to undertake the trapping and identification of Ireland’s 16 known species of mosquitoes.

So, when you are out celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day and wearing green, remember the green and black labels on those Bite-Lite® Natural Mosquito Repellent Candles and consider that warmer weather is just around the corner.

You don’t want to be saying, as they do in Ireland, “Ach, an corrmhíol diabhalta sin!” (Ach, that devilish mosquito!)

Haunted House Countdown

The fourth haunted house on the BiteLite® List of Halloween attractions is in Fort Worth, Texas, and has an unusual back drop– an abandoned meat packing factory!   The setting for such a venue is perfect, as is the name of the haunted house– “The Cutting Edge.”   The Cutting Edge Haunted House features live sets, animations, and hundreds of live actors inside and outside the building.    One of the best features of the attraction is all the real meat packing plant equipment left behind from when the planet closed years ago.

A sign on both the website and the attraction advises patrons to enter at their own risk, and the promoters mean it!    This amazing haunted house holds the Guiness Book of World Records for the longest walk through in a haunted house.

Regardless of what your plans are for Halloween in warmer climates like Texas, remember that if you plan on being outside, relaxing with your family in the backyard, you should light up a Bite-Lite® Natural Mosquito Repellent Candle to help repel pesky mosquitoes.   Light the candles 20 minutes before you head outside, so the wax has an opportunity to pool.   These mosquito candles are available at your local Retailer or on our Products page.
