The Science Behind Bite-Lite® Natural Mosquito Repellent Candles

Bite Lite® Natural Mosquito Repellent Candles were inspired by nature and designed by scientists.

Certain birds and mammals are known to rub themselves with fruit, leaves, or other plant parts for the apparent purpose of deterring pests.   This phenomenon is known as “anointing.”

As an example, animals have used lemons, limes, and other citrus fruits as anointing materials.   Monkeys, in particular, when presented with lemons and limes, will immediately rub the fruit on their fur, presumably to repel biting insects.

Scientists have studied this phenomenon and have determined that these materials represent a potential source of new natural mosquito repellents.    Read more

The basis for the animal’s behavior, as determined through scientific studies, has resulted in the identification of repellent ingredients present in a unique combination of essential oils that contain active ingredients that provide an effective, natural alternative to the typical approach of repelling candles with standard Citronella oil.

Many of these naturally occurring ingredients appear to mask the location of a human or animal host, and in higher concentrations will act as repellents.   Bite Lite® Natural Mosquito Repellent Candles feature this natural and proprietary “Cloak & Scatter® technology.”

Unlike standard citronella candles, Bite Lite® Natural Mosquito Repellent Candles offer scientifically proven protection with the added benefit of a pleasant aroma of natural lemongrass and spearmint oils.    Read more about the Repellency Evaluation.

Bite Lite® Natural Mosquito Repellent Candles can be used on patios, balconies, backyard dining areas, or other outdoor living areas where mosquitoes are a nuisance.   In order to release the natural oils into the air, and to enjoy maximum protection, the candles should be lit about 20 minutes before sitting outdoors; this allows the wax to get hot and “pool,” which allows the oils to evaporate and begin protecting the area you wish to protect.
